5 Benefits of Oil Pulling
What is oil pulling?
Oil pulling, which stems from traditional Ayurvedic medicine, is the act of swishing around an oil (often coconut oil) in your mouth for 15-20 minutes in order to “pull out” the toxins. It is said that oil pulling is best to do on an empty stomach but that’s up to you.
How do you oil pull?
If this is your first time oil pulling, then I advise that you start with less than a tablespoon of oil and work your way up. At first, it can take a few times to get used to the process and having the oil in your mouth for so long. I recommend people start with a ½ tbsp of oil and swish for about 5-10 minutes and then work your way up to the full tablespoon of oil and swishing for 15-20 minutes. Starting is super simple, just put the coconut oil in your mouth break it up a little and then proceed to swish it through your mouth and pull it through your teeth.
I find it easiest to do oil pulling while I’m doing something else so I’m not focused on it. You can easily do it in the shower, while watching TV, or if you have a blog it’s the perfect time to sit down and get a little bit of writing done (like I am right now). Once the time is up DO NOT spit it down the drain. You don’t want the oil hardening in your pipes because it will clog everything up. I tend to keep an empty plastic water bottle under my bathroom sink that I will spit the oil into or just spit it into the garbage. When I’m done, I rinse my mouth with warm water and then brush my teeth right away. This helps make sure that all the oil and toxins get flushed out of your mouth and nothing’s just lingering behind. For the best results you should try and fit oil pulling into your daily schedule, but even doing it a few times a week is super beneficial.
Why should you do it?
So now that you know what it is and how to do it, the big question is why? Why should you start oil pulling? Oil pulling has many different benefits that are worth adding it to your weekly beauty routine.

Oil pulling is an all natural way of whitening your teeth. Ditch the chemical filled white strips and switch over to something natural. Trust me, after giving it a try for a few weeks you won’t want to go back.

Your mouth is full of germs and that’s just a fact, at any given time there are up to 350 different types of bacteria in your mouth. We can never rid our bodies of germs but we can try out best to detox our mouths from said germs. Oil pulling is a great way of drawing toxins out of your mouth. Just be sure to NOT SWALLOW THE OIL (trust me – it’s happened before and it’s pretty gross).
3. Helps promote good oral hygiene
This may be a no brainer, but taking the bad toxins and germs out of your mouth helps! Oil pulling helps to reduce your risk of cavities, as well as reducing plaque. It is also said that it helps to keep your gums nice and healthy.
4. It helps with bad breath
Halitosis, or bad breath, affects almost 50% of the population, 50%! Bad breath is often caused by the bacteria living in your mouth, so removing the bacteria helps to eliminate or reduce bad breath.
5. It’s a better alternative to mouthwash
Do you use mouthwash? Once you start oil pulling you will say goodbye to your store-bought mouthwash and hello to coconut oil! Oil pulling does everything your mouthwash does and more. Plus you’re not getting all the chemicals and sometimes alcohol that your mouthwash might have. In our daily lives we are exposed to so many toxins, so why not cut one out and swap it for some oil?
